Many of the Riders of Rohan were actually women disguised with fake beards. This practical decision was made because many of the experienced horseback riders who responded to the casting call were women. To seamlessly integrate them into the predominantly male army, the production team equipped them with beards and helmets, allowing them to portray the rugged Riders of Rohan convincingly.
